Halo Community: Featured Artist – Tom Jurassic

The Halo Community is filled with many wonderful artists. Fan art, concept art, in game screenshots and much more is created within the talented fanbase of Halo. The Halo Community Featured Artist section of Halo Respawn is a place for such artists to be highlighted. With each instalment a new artist will be featured, with a glimpse of their work on show.

This featured artist is named Tom Jurassic. He specialises in Mega Construx photography and edits. With a near endless amount of Halo Mega Construx items being released, there’s also a near endless amount of art Tom can up with. He takes the time recreate some of the most iconic Halo scenes, whilst also making them his own. Tom has taken the time to provide us with a summary of his work and passion, which you can find in full below.

“Today I am very excited to join you here on Halo Respawn, to share a little more about my Halo Mega Construx photography.

For context – I have been a fan of Halo for a long time. I grew up playing Halo 3 and Halo Reach – and then, over the course of several years, I gradually expanded my knowledge of both the videogames and the expanded lore around Halo and discovered a real passion for the incredible lore and world-building behind the brand itself.

For a few years, I was involved in the Mega Bloks community – ultimately becoming one of the managers for the convention known as Bloksfest – before I took a break from Halo collecting for a while to pursue other interests. After discovering a deep passion for Photography, I eventually returned to Halo with this new perspective – and this is where I find myself today, capturing moments pulled from the Halo detail with my Mega Construx figures and vehicles.

Now I’ve introduced myself I’d like to breakdown a few of my favourite shots. I really hope you enjoy my work – I’m really excited to share my love for Halo with you!

This photograph was shot and edited around the time when Halo Reach was announced as coming to the Master Chief Collection. Inspired by the mission ‘The Package’, I wanted to capture a dynamic-feeling moment with Noble Six and some ODSTs.

The depth of field makes this photograph I feel – with Six in sharp focus whilst the ODSTs are just out of focus in the background. I also like the drabber colours I could achieve here – reflecting the darker tone of Halo Reach.

With this photograph, I wanted to capture a tense moment within the Human-Covenant war. I also felt really enamoured by the Halo 4 art style at the time, so wanted to utilise those character styles. This was also one of the first times where I really began to experiment with adding post-shoot VFX to my photographs, too.

This photo was inspired by the ‘Deliver Hope’ trailer, and is one which I am proud of. I set my DSLR up on a tripod and slowly and methodically placed a plethora of different characters in the background of the shot – creating something which feels dynamic. Reflecting on it now, I’d change some of the VFX – but, as with anything, I always look at things and think about how I would do them differently if I was to create them again.

Lastly is ‘Infinite’ – my first tribute to Halo Infinite. I built an interior set for the Pelican using spare pieces, and experimented with the ISO and Aperture levels on my camera to create a nicely silhouetted Master Chief. The addition of the Reach MA37 helped to add a subtle final addition to the photo. I then made the temperature cooler to reflect the blue lighting, and had the completed piece.

Those are four of my favourite photographs – but I share lots over on Twitter, and frequently use the ‘Halo Spotlight’ hashtag so you may spot them popping up now and then. Thanks for reading this – and thanks for the support with my photos. I love Halo, and I can’t wait to see more fans getting even more creative once Halo Infinite releases!”

A big thank you to Tom for writing the above. No doubt all of us at Halo Respawn and all of you reading have a better insight into the art that Tom creates. You can find more of Tom’s artwork on his Twitter Account.
