Halo Spotlight Weekly Roundup: Featured Artist – Sam Brookman-Amissah

Hello everyone. Welcome to Halo United. The place that unites all the Halo Community goodness in one place. As always, this week we’ve got another Halo Spotlight Weekly Roundup for you all, so be ready for some awesome Halo Community creations.

This spotlight piece will be showing off artwork by Sam Brookman-Amissah. Samuel creates a range of artwork using many different styles, such as traditional painting styled art, and even in game model and texture designs.

Samuel was also a concept artist for Installation 01, a fan made Halo game. You can see some of the concept art for that project below. Samuel was kind enough to send over the images, along with their titles and descriptions.

Sierra

“Let’s start with an oldie! I don’t use the word ‘sketch’ lightly, but this piece is exactly that: a quick sketch of about 5 hours, just enough to convey the energy and tension I had in mind and finished without too much thought put into polishing it. Works well for the scene, I’d say.”

Installation 01 Recruit Armor Illustration

“After I had worked out the base design in collaboration with the Installation 01 art team, I still felt its presentation had come a bit short. That’s where this illustration comes in, where I focused on overall aesthetic and weight. Despite my struggles with the rather flat lighting and static perspective I chose here, midday beach scenes are a nice comfort zone for me by now!”

Installation 01 Flamethrower Concept

“Like many, I became a fan of the flamethrower the second I got to use it in Combat Evolved PC, great memories! Fittingly, my rework here was the first thing I chose to do when I joined Installation 01. I put most effort into making its modular construction work and including a few design choices from Halo Wars, while also looking into and comparing Halo 3 and CE.”

Asset Render For University Unreal Course

“The title says precisely what this one is all about: I spent earlier this year learning the basics of game design, focusing on Blender, Substance and Unreal Engine 4. Concluding the course with a finished, ODST-focused game, I also rendered most of the assets modelled and textured for the project. These ones were my personal favourites, not because of any delusions of great modelling, but simply because I enjoy Halo’s art style a lot, especially with smaller scale props.”

Installation 01 Judgement Concept Paint-Overs

“Ever since Installation 01 publicly showed off Aviixe’s concept art for our Covenant-themed map ‘Judgement’ – a long time before I joined the team – I’ve been amazed with the environment. Getting the chance to work out multiple pieces for the still in development map was in many regards a dream come true.”
“The first one I finished was the furthest shot we have so far, anchoring the architecture in High Charity and filling in the gaps left by our close ups, especially the roof. The other one I got here was to figure out the scene’s details and define the section closest to the camera. Really like how both turned out.”

Installation 01 Elite Ranger (Revised)

“Right after I was done with the flamethrower, I hopped on over to designing one of our many Elite armour concepts, my personal favourite, the Elite Ranger. However, these days, I don’t look back on the previous design too fondly, despite it having been a great learning experience for me.

That’s why my most recent illustration, this revision, was a rework of the same armour, this time respecting more of Halo 2’s groundwork and finding the shaping and presentation I can be very content with!”

We really hoped you enjoyed those pieces as much as we do. A massive thank you to Sam Brookman-Amissah for sending over such incredible artwork. If you’d like to see more from Samuel, you can do so on their Twitter Account and Artstation Profile.

Now it’s time to move onto the Halo Spotlight Weekly Roundup, which gives a peak at the past week of features that have gone live over on Halo Spotlight.

Halo Spotlight Weekly Roundup

Fanart Features have made a comeback this week, along with an incredible Q&A featuring not just one guest, but two. It’s also the first Q&A of its type. Please enjoy a snippet of those two pieces below.

Fanart Feature: matthewo1o

Dusk

“Dusk was inspired by Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Zombies menu and also a lofi music by Rahetalius that was also named Dusk.”

E.K.I.A

“This was a surprise collab to my awesome friend on Twitter, Rookie425, where his OC named Krone is finishing off his dying target while explosions are happening behind him. Why? Cause they’re a cool sight.”

Those are just two incredible pieces of SFM Halo fanart by matthewo1o. You can find the full version of the piece, along with some additional information on their creative process on Halo Spotlight.

Halo Creation Q&A: Halo Combat Revolved Mod

Question: What are going to be some of the most noticeable changes that the mod brings to Halo Combat Evolved?

Rosy Muscovy: “I feel like we’ve practically changed everything at least a little bit at this point. If I had to just pick 3 that were changed the most or will be most noticeable, I would say, 1st, the visuals. Connor did a beautiful job of touching up every single level to make the level really feel like it has its own identify.

Connor Dawn: “With Rosy he always has some kind of reasoning behind encounters. Like you said it’s not just “Oh I’m gonna put Hunters here.” One of my favourite things about the mod is that, of course it takes place on Installation 04, and there are a lot more Covenant on Installation 04 than there are Humans.

This Q&A was the first Halo Creation Q&A, and also the first every Q&A to feature multiple guests. What you’ve read above is just a small snippet from the written version, which you can find here. Alternatively, you can watch the full Q&A below.
